3 ways to boost your social media traffic without paying for digital ads
Just because you can’t use Facebook or Google ads anymore doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from social media in the final week of the campaign.
Welcome to the beginning of the end of targeted digital advertising in American politics. What was once a breakthrough tool that was largely credited with helping then-candidate Donald J. Trump win the presidency in 2016 is no longer a viable tool for fundraising or GOTV efforts for the foreseeable future, and perhaps forever.
Just because campaigns can no longer rely on boosted Facebook posts or digital ads to win over last-minute supporters, however, doesn’t mean that your campaign or PAC can’t benefit from using Facebook, Google or other social and digital networks over the next week. Here are three tips for driving the vote without using paid digital ads.
1. Use your followers and supporters to spread your message.
If your communications team has done their job these last few months, you’ve likely amassed a sizable following on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and/or Parlor. Why not post a message on these networks asking for your followers to share your website with their own friends and followers? You can also make a plea via email to have your supporters invite people in their address books to join your team (via both email and social). It’s always better to focus on organic reach anyway, so why not boost these efforts?
2. Up the level of creativity in your social media posts.
Social media posts tend to have higher engagement when they are accompanied by more captive creative, such as a short video (less than one minute) or professional-looking graphics. Make sure you take the time to up your posting game during these final few days and focus on creating quality posts, not just a large quantity of posts, and you’ll be on your way to making up the ad engagement difference in no time.
3. Run polls or contests on your social media accounts.
Interactive posts are also a great way to boost engagement. Run a Twitter poll or ask people to like/RT your posts based on a question asked in the tweet. You can also give away a free hat or mug from your campaign store to a random follower who comments on a specific Facebook post. Not only will these posts collect more traffic, but if they’re shared they’ll appear in additional newsfeeds.
